The Alabama Shakes—a four-piece soul-rock band from Athens, Ala.—are currently playing a free gig at New York’s Lakeside Lounge. The gig was in response to selling out two shows in the city earlier this week. The band garnered national attention after their CMJ Music Marathon appearance in New York City this October. A lot of praise centers on singer Brittany Howard. She belts out a deep soul sound that sounds like a mixture of Sharon Jones and Amy Winehouse (other writers have thrown in everyone from Janis Joplin to Robert Plant). While Howard’s talent demands attention, everyone else in the band rises to the occasion with tight and powerful playing. “I Found You” is off the band’s four-track EP. Their debut full-length album is expected to be out sometime next spring.
