“Holland,” the first single from new band Cold Specks, highlights the deep, soulful voice of Canadian singer Al Spx. Spx, who has recorded as Basket of Figs and the Hotel Ghost, reportedly calls her music “doom soul.” “Holland” evokes a stark gospel/bluesy sound as Spx wails over a quiet melody of cello, guitar and piano. The music drops out when she tells us, “Into dust, we will all return.” From there, the drums come marching in and the song crescendos for a verse, and then the music falls back as the smoky vocals close out the song. In addition to Spx, the song features Rob Ellis (percussion), Pete Roberts (guitar), Thomas Greene (piano) and Tom Havelock (cello).
